Prof. Edward Chen, GBS, CBE, JP

Professor Edward Chen is an internationally renowned economist and distinguished educator, holding degrees from the University of Hong Kong and Oxford University. From 1995 to 2007, he served as the President of Lingnan University, successfully transforming it into a liberal arts institution. Professor Chen has received honorary doctorates from several institutions, including the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Education University of Hong Kong and University of Plymouth in England. He is a fellow of the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong and a fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. He has been a visiting scholar at several prestigious international universities, such as Yale University, Oxford University, Stockholm University, and the University of California, Davis. Additionally, he holds honorary professorships at various universities. Between 2014 and 2017, Professor Chen served as the President of the Qianhai Institute for Innovative Research in Shenzhen. He is also a member of the Economist Committee under Time Magazine and a Fulbright Scholar. He was the Chairman of the Board of HKU SPACE from 2013 until his retirement in 2022. In terms of public service, Professor Chen was a member of the Basic Law Consultative Committee for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region from 1985 to 1990, a Legislative Council member from 1991 to 1992, and a member of the Executive Council from 1992 to 1997. He also chaired the Consumer Council from 1991 to 1997, laying the groundwork for fair competition policies in Hong Kong. In recognition of his contributions, Professor Chen was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1993, awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1995, and received the Gold Bauhinia Star from the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2003.
